ABOUT SUTANU SUR, TABLA


Sutanu Sur, tablaSutanu Sur is a distinguished Tabla artist, Indian-Western crossover musician, an educator based out of Appleton, Wisconsin, USA. He has been a featured soloist with the Western Classical Orchestra and Choir at major concerts and music festivals. He recently has been the featured guest artist with the Atlanta Master Chorale and Orchestra. His performance as the Principal Tabla of the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra was instrumental for the Orchestra to win the prestigious “The American Prize” in 2023 for Orchestral Performance (professional division). He is a member of JEDI (Justice Equity Diversity Inclusion) committee for the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra and the Diversity Alliance at the Percussive Arts Society. He has been the featured Guest Tabla Artist at Lawrence University, Green Lake Festival of Music, Consulate General of India (Chicago), Festival of India, Rhythms of the World etc.

Sutanu's formal training in Tabla started in India at a tender age of 5 from his Guru Late Pandit Sukumar Moitra for 12 years. He has won many awards from various state and national level competitions in India and currently serves in the panel of judges in international music competitions. His constant focus to explore the new dimensions of the Tabla stands out in his performances and as an educator. He has pursued Software Engineering with 15+ years of experience in the field of Information Technology. He often explains in his lec-dems how tabla has helped his analytical and logical skills to excel in both the fields.
