Job description
The Music Institute of Chicago welcomes everyone back to live concerts and performances! Our Stage/House Managers play an important role in preparing our theaters for concerts and welcoming guests. They are responsible for assisting with event operations in Nichols Concert Hall, helping to ensure a safe, productive, and pleasant experience for all performers, patrons, and guests of the venues.
Candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule, with a minimum of three shifts per month between November and January. After January, must be able to work a minimum of 6 shifts each month.
Most shifts are evenings and/or weekends. (A typical shift is 3-4 hours.)
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
Venue Operations
- Screen performers and patrons and admit them into the facility.
- Lock and unlock the concert hall, elevator, and rooms as assigned.
- Lock and unlock the campus facility when necessary. Disarm and/or set the alarm as appropriate.
- Setup and operate Audio/Visual equipment (not including livestream equipment).
- Operate front and back of house light boards.
- Move instruments, equipment, chairs, and music stands as needed.
- Monitor all assigned event spaces to ensure safe, orderly, and clean operation.
- Report incidents, damage, and concerns to supervisor in a timely and effective manner.
Administrative Assistance
- Implement setup and operation instructions provided on the event staffing sheet.
- Communicate with the primary rental or MIC contact for any last-minute changes or requests.
- Submit monthly shift requests and report changes to supervisor in a timely manner.
- Submit substitute shift requests through the Substitute Request Form.
- Enter hours worked in timekeeping system in a timely manner, prior to each payroll deadline.
- Create signs and materials for events when instructed.
Customer Service
- Assist rental contacts/staff, MIC faculty and patrons with facility related requests, consulting supervisor when necessary or when a request falls outside of the normal duties as listed in this job description.
- Report positive or negative feedback to supervisor in a timely and effective manner.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in concert or theater production
- Due to frequent interactions and communications with musicians, faculty and performers, a Bachelor’s degree in a music related field is preferred, or progress towards completion of degree

Physical Demands
- Must be willing to wear personal protective gear correctly throughout the day
- Frequently moves audio/visual equipment depending on needs of specific events. Must be able to move large equipment and instruments (between 20-50 pounds) such as grand pianos, choral risers, portable tables, etc.
Hours:
Must be able to work a flexible schedule, mainly evenings and weekends.
- Must commit to working a minimum of 6 shifts per month
"Typical" shifts may include 3-4 hours weekday evenings and/or during the following weekend hours:
- Saturdays, 5:00 - 11:00 p.m. and 2:30 – 10:00 p.m.
- Sundays, 7:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $15.00 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 5 per week
