The Bach Double is a concerto for two violins with string orchestra. In this class, students will play both the solo and the orchestral parts (arranged for four violins).
Key components
- Each student will play every part, and, in rehearsal, students will alternate parts and support each other. Everyone learns the piece, how to play together, how to rehearse, how to cue, and how to read a score, while also having solo concerto experience - all without a conductor.
- This multifaceted approach will develop invaluable musicianship, score reading, and advanced ensemble playing skills.
- At the student concert at the end of the session, each student will have the opportunity to perform at least one movement as a soloist.
Level I (Video Audition Required)
This class is for students who are able to play at least one solo part, but preferably both the 1st and 2nd violin solo parts of the first movement of the Bach Double Concerto. Please submit a video of the student playing the solo part(s) alone (without accompaniment) to Sarah Plum. Students need to be beyond a Suzuki Book 4 level of playing. (The 2nd solo is the last piece in Suzuki Book 4 and the 1st solo is in Suzuki Book 5.)
Level II (Video Audition Required)
This class is for students who are at an advanced level, playing concerto repertoire of Mozart, de Beriot, Viotti, or higher (Lalo, Bruch, Wieniawski), with proficiency in all 3-octave scales. Participants need to be able to play at least one solo part, but preferably both, of all three movements of the Bach Double Concerto. Please submit a video of the student playing the solo parts of all three movements alone (without accompaniment) to Sarah Plum .
