Â
This class explores Baroque interpretation and related violin technique through the analysis and performance of solo Bach violin repertoire.Â
Key components
- Participants will prepare one movement of solo Bach of their choice and the first movement of Sonata No. 1 in G minor.Â
- Students will analyze and study the repertoire together, identifying phrasing and cadences and working collaboratively to determine and apply interpretive tools such as time, sound production, tone color, dynamics, and articulation.Â
- Students will perform for each other and offer feedback based on common criteria. Each student will be given specific assignments to practice in between classes.
This class is for advanced violinists and violists who have experience performing unaccompanied Bach sonatas, partitas, and suites. The first movement of the First Sonata in G minor by Bach is required and must be prepared in advance. (Violists accepted into the class will play this movement a 5th lower).  All students must also prepare an unaccompanied Bach piece of their choice (other than a fugue or the chaconne).
