The MTNA National Student Competitions are the most successful and prestigious student competitions in the country Each year, thousands of students compete for top prizes and national recognition. The purpose of the Music Teachers National Association Performance competitions is to provide educational experiences for students and teachers and to recognize exceptionally talented young artists and their teachers in their pursuit of musical excellence.
The three-tiered competitions begin with live state competitions. The winners/representatives of each state's competitions advance to a video-only division competition. Division winners compete in the national finals at the annual MTNA National Conference. The state competitions are considered the primary educational level with the division and national levels showcasing outstanding performance and honoring significant pedagogical achievement. The National Conference takes place in Spokane, Washington March 16-20, 2019.
Competitions include Composition, Brass, Piano, String, Voice, Woodwind and Chamber Music.
2018 MTNA Competition Results for Illinois
Illinois Senior Composition
Winner: Holden Mui, 16, student of Matthew Hagle
Holden advanced to the video-only division round and placed first. He will advance to the national competition in Spokane, Washington this March.
Illinois Senior Performance String
Winner: Irina Casasnovas, 18, Academy violin student of Almita Vamos
Irina advanced to the video-only division round where she placed as first alternate for the national competition in Spokane, Washington this March.

Winner: Katya Moeller, 14, Academy violin student of Almita Vamos
Katya advanced to the video-only division round and placed first. She will advance to the national competition in Spokane, Washington this March.
