Four Academy students - violinists Joshua Brown and Karisa Chiu, violist Freya Irani, and cellist Alex Kim - performed an unusual work with the Northbrook Symphony on their subscription concert November 15, playing a concerto for string quartet and orchestra by the early nineteenth century composer Ludwig Spohr. This German composer, conductor, and violinist took part in the first performance of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony and has left us an unforgettable description of Beethoven on the podium. Spohr's music is from the beginning of the romantic period in music history. His concerto offered the quartet many opportunities for virtuosity and beautiful lyrical playing.
