In celebration of “Music in Our Schools Month,” the Wintrust Mural Building features the Music Institute of Chicago (MIC) March through early April.
We asked mural artist Sick Fisher to help MIC represent music's ability to connect people from all walks of life through a common language and experience offering joy, comfort, and connection. The resulting mural celebrates MIC’s vibrant musical community and depicts teachers and students of every age and ability connecting with one another through music. Musicians are seen playing a variety of instruments and styles of music with friends, fellow students, faculty, and other professional colleagues.
Wintrust has been a proud sponsor of MIC for more than six years, thanks in large part to Trustee and Group Senior Vice President of Wintrust Commercial Banking, Carlos R. Cárdenas. Carlos joined the MIC board in 2016, and the connection between Wintrust and the MIC has grown, harnessing our shared commitment to creating a vibrant and sustainable community for all citizens of the Chicagoland area.
More about muralist Sick Fisher
What’s it like creating work on such a large scale?
Hard to describe- It feels like very few people get this opportunity to create on such a scale so it's a major step in my career as an artist. I am honored to have been trusted to create this one for MIC and the majority of car-commuting Chicago.
What was it like making the MIC Wintrust mural?
It was so different than other jobs I've done! First, I had to design the whole thing digitally, which I hadn't done on this scale until now. I was very happy to learn a few things along the way while designing this thing so let's just say it was at first challenging and ultimately very rewarding.
Can you tell me a little more about your musical background?
I started playing guitar at the age of ten.. I believe I got one for my tenth birthday after my older cousin convinced my folks to get me the instrument I wanted and not a piano. *Thanks, Tim* Since then, I have steered more towards the bass and currently play in the band, Human Errors, as a bassist.
Can you tell us some of the places we can see your work?
Sure! Most of my public work is in and around Humboldt Park / Logan Square and another big grouping up at the Howard Red Line station. I have work all over the country though so keep an eye out in Florida, California, Kansas, Michigan, North Carolina, and Tennessee! View his murals, paintings, and videos here >>
