MIC Welcomes New Piano Faculty to Academy
March 11th, 2017
The Music Institute of Chicago announces the appointment of pianists Yana Reznik and Winston Choi to the faculty of its award-winning Academy program, an elite training center for gifted pre-college pianists and string players.
Born in Moscow, Yana Reznik has performed in some of the world’s most iconic venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. Michael Walsh of Time magazine wrote, “Think of her as a young Martha Argerich and you will have some idea of the experience that lies in store for you.”
More than a typical performer, Reznik has been revolutionizing perceptions of classical music with innovative programming and passionate storytelling. She has appeared on The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson, performing with Nicola Benedetti; and on the American Country Music Awards on PBS, performing with Carrie Underwood. Academy Director Jim Setapen commented, “Yana not only plays with beauty, passion, a brilliant virtuoso technique, and total conviction, but she also connects extraordinarily well with audiences through her naturally charming spoken introductions to the pieces she performs.” Enjoy Reznik's interview with WFMT here >>
Reznik holds a bachelor of music degree from the Manhattan School of Music and a master of music degree from the University of Southern California. She has also studied at the Rachmaninoff School of Music in Moscow. Music Institute President and CEO Mark George said, “The Academy is ecstatic to welcome Yana to its faculty. She is the very definition of what a 21st century musician needs to be. I expect her to be a transformative teacher and a creative force for many years to come.”
Originally from Canada, Winston Choi is the head of the piano program at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts. Known for his colorful approach to programming and insightful commentary from the stage, Choi has recently appeared in recital at the National Arts Centre in Canada, the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, New York’s Carnegie-Weill Recital Hall and Merkin Recital Hall, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. An accomplished chamber musician, he tours regularly with his wife, violinist Minghuan Xu as Duo Diorama, as well as with the Pivot Chamber Soloists.
Choi obtained his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Indiana University and Doctor of Music degree from Northwestern University. Music Institute President and CEO Mark George said, “Winston Choi is a wonderful addition to our faculty. His artistry as a performer and insight as a teacher will deepen the quality of the Academy experience. Winston’s track record as a teacher is nothing short of amazing.”
