Congratulations to Academy violists Kayla Cabrera, 18, student of Roland Vamos and Peter Morin, 17, student of CSO assistant principal viola Li-Kuo Chang, who have been accepted as members of the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA) for the 2017 season.
This summer’s NYO-USA tour will take the orchestra to Latin America for the first time, under the direction of American conductor Marin Alsop. In addition to performing Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, NYO-USA has commissioned a tone poem by celebrated composer Gabriela Lena Frank for NYO-USA’s annual concert here at Carnegie Hall and on tour.
The 2017 NYO-USA program runs from July 1 through August 6 and begins with a three-week residency at Purchase College, SUNY, where orchestra members will work with Orchestra Director James Ross and a faculty of principal players from many of America’s greatest orchestras. This is Kayla’s second year touring with NYO-USA.
