Student Spotlight: Lucy Wu

This week, the Academy celebrates cellist Lucy Wu, a student of Dr. Stefan Kartman, Professor of Cello and Chamber Music at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Lucy has had an amazing year of musical achievements!

She recently won the 2024 Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Audrey G. Baird Stars of Tomorrow Competition, where she performed the Dvorak Concerto with the Milwaukee Symphony. 

She was also the winner of the 2024 Enkor International Music Competition, 2024 DePaul National Concerto Competition performing the Elgar Concerto with the Oistrakh Symphony, 2023 Chippewa Valley Symphony Young Artist Competition performing the Elgar Concerto with the Chippewa Valley Symphony, and 2023 Chicago International Music Competition. She was a finalist in the 2023 Final Forte Bolz Young Artist Competition- performing the Elgar Concerto with the Madison Symphony live on PBS Wisconsin and Wisconsin Public Radio, and received honorable mention at the 2024 Walgreens National Concerto Competition.

In addition to being an MIC Academy Merit Scholarship fellow, Lucy has received Young Artist 
scholarships at the 2022, 2023, and 2024 Schubert Club Competition and 2024 Civic Music Milwaukee 
Competition.

Quartet Meraviglia with Rodolfo Vieira-2024 Bronze at Fischoff

Lucy is also an avid chamber musician in the Academy. This year, she was a member of the award-winning Quartet Meraviglia, recent winner of the Bronze Medal at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition Junior Division, the Silver Medal at the Saint Paul String Quartet Competition, and was the overall open division winner of the MYA Chicago National Chamber Music Competition. Lucy performed with Quartet Meraviglia at the MIC Gala Benefit at the Four Seasons Chicago on May 20th.

Lucy is a co-principal of her school orchestra at Whitefish Bay High School, where she is also the vice president of the Music Society, captain of the debate team, and a reporter for the Tower Times.

This summer, Lucy will be attending the Bowdoin International Music Festival in Brunswick, Maine, where she will study with David Ying.
